Of course you could still be wasting your ad dollars advertising a phone number that nobody will remember in a commercial that irritates people into switching stations. Why would you?

People will remember you forever. A RingWord is descriptive. A RingWord is memorable and is your product or company. A phone number is abstract and relates to nothing so people forget it as quickly as they hear it.
Sure it's a new concept, so was Google, for that matter, so was the Internet. You could keep doing everthing the old way, but then why not advertise using carrier pigeons?
